Sarah Winman gets 'marvellous' marketing campaign

Tinder Press is running an “extensive” marketing campaign for Sarah Winman’s A Year of Marvellous Ways, including sending out sloe gin to trade and media and producing packs for independent booksellers which include a note from the author.

As part of the promotion for A Year of Marvellous Ways, Winman, whose debut novel was When God Was a Rabbit, will go on a major UK bookshop tour, and appear at festivals including the Penzance Literary Festival.

A Year of Marvellous Ways is set in the wilds of Cornwall in the aftermath of the Second World War and tells the story of the friendship between an old woman coming to the end of her life and a young soldier who sees little point in going on with his.

Tinder Press has produced special orange proofs with blue sprayed edges and die-cut double cover, and is delivering 100 bespoke bottles of Marvellous Ways branded sloe gin to trade and media.

Independent bookseller packs contain bookmarks, posters, finished copies of the book and a note from Winman sent via the Tinder Press Book Club and to Cornish shops.

The publisher is also running a competition to win a holiday in a Cornish lighthouse.

Bookshops are being encouraged to take part in a ‘By The Sea’ window display competition to tie in with Independent Booksellers Week, using packs of sea-shell cut-outs and posters.

Shops where events are being held will receive a special sea-themed window pack including a blue fishing net, bags of sea shells and exclusive POS.

The ‘Love Is a Marvellous Thing’ digital marketing campaign has included the release of audio and videos of Winman reading from her new book, a 24-hour promotion on blogger resource site Bookbridgr, and digital assets for bloggers and retailers.

The #marvellousways hashtag on social media has had nearly 300,000 Twitter impressions so far, said Tinder Press.
