Manchester-based indie publisher Saraband is launching a "green book bundle" option on its website, in support of two environmental charities.
Following the success of its 2020 Christmas food bank bundles, this year's initiative will focus on gifting literature bundles about the environment ahead of Christmas.
Visitors to the online shop will be able buy a book alongside a donation to the Open Spaces Society and Greenspace Scotland. The charities work to protect public rights of way and open green spaces in the UK, such as common land, village greens and urban parks.
The books come gift-wrapped with a personalised postcard, or a voucher option lets the recipient choose a book themselves on receipt of their card.
Readers can select from a range of fiction and non-fiction titles including Graeme Macrae Burnet’s Case Study, J A Mensah’s Castles from Cobwebs, Jim Crumley’s Lakeland Wild and Roy Dennis’ Mistletoe Winter.
Saraband founder and m.d. Sara Hunt said: “We have published books on nature and conservation for many years to inspire and help spread the word that our planet needs protecting from devastating human impact. By now no one doubts that the situation is urgent, and we all need to act. But the pandemic has also underlined how important it is for our health and wellbeing to have access to nature and green spaces. We’re delighted to partner with two excellent organisations that exist to promote both these crucial causes. We hope that people will enjoy giving the gift of reading this Christmas, while helping others to savour and protect our precious green spaces.”
Commenting on the scheme, Open Spaces Societys general secretary Kate Ashbrook said: “The Open Spaces Society, Britain’s oldest national conservation body, fights to conserve and promote our environment by protecting paths and open spaces, throughout England and Wales, for all to enjoy. With no public funding we rely on donations, subscriptions and legacies to support our vital work. We are delighted to have been chosen by Saraband as partners in its Christmas fundraising initiative.”
