Sandstone Press has signed a deal for After the Wedding by debut novelist Eve Harris, describing it as containing a "rich blend of humour and pathos".
Managing director Robert Davidson acquired UK, Ireland and Commonwealth rights excluding Canada from Diana Beaumont at Rupert Heath Literary Agency.
Sandstone, which has recently joined Faber Factory Plus, will publish in September 2013.
The book follows 19-year-old Chani who lives in the ultra-orthodox Jewish community of north-west London. The publisher said: "She has never had physical contact with a man, but is bound to marry a stranger . . . Soon buried secrets, fear and sexual desire bubble to the surface in a story of liberation and choice; not to mention what happens on the wedding night."
Davidson, who is also director of the Inverness Book Festival, said: "A rich blend of humour and pathos [After the Wedding] examines what is coming to be seen as the great issue of the 21st century: the modern world's accomodation, or otherwise, with traditional religion."
