Saltyard buys Bridgewater memoir

John Murray Press imprint Saltyard Books has bought a memoir by British potter Emma Bridgewater.

Publisher Elizabeth Hallett bought world rights for two books from Sarah Ballard at United Agents and will publish Toast & Marmalade and Other Stories in March 2014.

Bridgewater established her pottery business 28 years ago, with over 200 people now employed in her Staffordshire factory and "quintessentially British designs" featuring trailing sweet peas, hens, figs and roses. The memoir will explain the personal stories behind the designs, many of them derived from memories of childhood.

Hallett said: "I have been a huge fan of Emma Bridgewater's pottery for years . . . for me the morning always starts better with tea from a Bridgewater mug." She promised that Toast & Marmalade and Other Stories would "celebrate Emma's art, English craft, vintage-modern style, family, friends and home."

Bridgewater said she had "been storing up a hoard of stories as life helter-skelters along, and I'm really excited to have the chance to share them in this book".
