Profile has reported a 3% sales rise to £7.35m for the year to end 31st March 2011, with profits up 69% to £405,000.
M.d. Andrew Franklin said the publisher was delighted to announce these "healthy" results on the day that it learned of its first-ever Man Booker-shortlisted title (Esi Edugyan's Half Blood Blues, published by Serpent’s Tail). "The results are especially pleasing given the state of the economy," he added.
Franklin said there had been no single runaway hit, but a year of strong performers including Simon Garfield's Just My Type (selling 46,000 copies), Chris Mullins' Decline & Fall (20,000) and Susan Hill's The Small Hand (50,000). Why Don't Penguins' Feet Freeze? was also a number one Kindle bestseller.
Franklin added that the current financial year had started well, with good performances from Alan Bennett's Smut and Michael Brooks' Free Radicals.
"Profile has a continuous record of quality, profitable publishing since the company was founded in 1996," he said. "Through good times and bad, it's steady as she grows."
