Oneworld’s Rock the Boat imprint has bought a YA novel about consent and rape culture by debut author Amy Beashel.
Love Will Take You is about 17-year-old Izzy who is coerced into sex by a boy threatening to spread photos of her around college. She also faces problems at home from her stepfather. The book is written in nine parts to reflect the structure of Izzy’s favourite radio programme, Desert Island Discs, and is described as “a powerful exploration of rape culture and domestic abuse”.
Commissioning editor Shadi Doostdar pre-empted world rights in a five-figure, two-book deal from Hannah Sheppard at DHH Literary Agency.
Doostdar said: “Love Will Take You is smart, engaging and utterly unforgettable. Amy brings fantastic writing and great insight to explore one of the most pressing issues of our time – the role of power, manipulation and consent in our relationships, from rape culture to the insidious erosion of control in domestic abuse. Everyone at Oneworld was desperate to read it.”
Rock the Boat will publish Love Will Take You in hardback in Spring 2019, with Amy’s second novel to follow in early 2020.
