Riverrun to publish award-winning sports writer Hamilton's first novel

Quercus imprint riverrun will publish Injury Time, the first novel by non-fiction author Duncan Hamilton, three-time winner of The William Hill Sports Book of the Year Award.

Injury Time will be about accepting the past and living a life in the present, hope and disappointment, success and failure and how close all of those things are in life and in the glory game.

UK and Commonwealth rights were acquired from agent Grainne Fox of Fletcher & Company. Publication is scheduled for 8th July 2021.

Jon Riley, riverrun publisher, said: "Duncan is justly our most acclaimed writer on sport. In Injury Time he brings his unique insight and knowledge of football to show the darker side of the beautiful game. It will take its place among the great sporting novels, including This Sporting Life, The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner and The Damned United."

Hamilton said: "I’ve spent my life being obsessed by football and those who play it. It always produces such spirit and such great human drama. Anything and everything can happen. The game – and its disparate cast of characters – lends itself so perfectly to fiction."

Hamilton's William Hill Sports Book of the Year Award-winning titles are: The Great Romantic: Cricket and the Golden Age of Neville Cardus (Hodder & Stoughton, 2019), Harold Larwood: The Authorised Biography (Quercus, 2009) and Provided You Don’t Kiss Me (Fourth Estate, 2007).
