Random House Children’s Books has acquired a three-book series from children’s author, poet and illustrator Laura Dockrill.
Commissioning editor Lauren Buckland and editor Andrea MacDonald acquired world rights to the series from Cathryn Summerhayes at WME. The first title is scheduled for publication in early 2013 under the Red Fox imprint.
The series will feature new character Darcy Burdock, a 10-year-old girl billed as Matilda meets Clarice Bean, who will offer a “fresh, edgy, distinctive take on the world”.
Buckland and MacDonald said: “We are so excited to be working with Laura—everyone at RHCB has been completely charmed by the force of her creativity and imagination. Already a pro at interacting with children at events such as the Roald Dahl Funny Prize and the Ministry of Stories, we can’t wait to introduce Darcy Burdock—her unique voice and energetic performance style is going to be such a hit.”
Summerhayes said: “Laura is not just a wonderful writer but a true force of nature, and the team at RHCB, with their creative brilliance and boundless energy, make this the perfect partnership. I can’t wait to see the results of their labours.”
Dockrill is a Brit School graduate, and is on the advisory panel for the the Ministry of Stories. Her poetry collections are published by HarperCollins, and she is writing a sitcom, as well as several pieces for BBC Radio 4.
