Reed Elsevier continues online investment


Anglo-Dutch media group Reed Elsevier has announced turnover of &pound;3.4bn for the year to 31st December 1999, a figure which includes its worldwide legal and educational and professional book publishing businesses. Pretax profits excluding exceptional items and goodwill fell by 8% to &pound;710m. Crispin Davis, Reed's chief executive, said the results were "disappointing".</p><p>

Reed's legal unit, which includes Butterworths Tolley and Reed Educational and Professional Publishing in the UK, generated &pound;1.3bn turnover in 1999, up 15% from &pound;1.1bn in 1998.</p><p>
