Random House division Cornerstone is to offer abridged versions of Chris Anderson's recently published book Free: The Future of a Radical Price for nothing on the online music service Spotify and via the Brand Republic website.
Spotify is to launch an abridged audio version of the book in the UK as its first ever audio book gratis. The online music service, which gives users the ability to stream full-length tracks on demand rather than downloading tracks to a hard drive, uses a "freemium" business model. Spotify will also deliver over 2m online adverts to its market in the sponsorship deal negotiated with Cornerstone.
In a second sponsorship partnership for the new book, Cornerstone will be offering 2,000 abridged free versions of the book in paperback and in ebook format in partnership with Adobe, through the advertising, marketing and PR industry website Brand Republic. Through Brand Republic's website, users will be presented with a choice of downloading their free abridged ebook, registering to receive a free abridged paperback, or buying the full "premium" hardback version.
