Random House UK has reported a "significant uplift" in e-book sales over Christmas, attributing the growth to e-book readers being given as presents.
RHG says it sold an average of 1,000 e-books per day on Christmas and Boxing days, with sales continuing to run at three times the pre-Christmas level. Popular titles included The First Apostle by James Becker, Markus Zusak's The Book Thief and Blindsighted by Karin Slaughter.
Fionnuala Duggan, director of RHG digital, said: "We have seen a healthy appetite for our e-books since we launched our initial list last September, with sales running ahead of targets. The popularity of e-book readers as Christmas presents has provided another huge boost."
The publisher intends to expand its current list of 800 e-book titles to 2,500 by the end of 2009.
