Newly appointed Pushkin editor Harriet Wade has acquired Sarah Blau’s psychological thriller The Others weeks after joining the publisher from Oneworld.
Wade’s joined Pushkin on June 11th as editor of its crime list, Vertigo, following an editorial role at OneWorld and prior to that a brief spell in TV and film production. The new position will see her take particular responsibility for Pushkin Vertigo’s established list of crime classics and thrillers, including new editions or new translations of works by classic crime writers including Margaret Millar, Boileau-Narcejac, Friedrich Dürrenmatt and Soji Shimada. She will also handle titles by contemporary writers such as Emma Viskic and Martin Holmén.
Pushkin publisher and m.d. Adam Freudenheim said: "I’m thrilled that Harriet has joined Pushkin to focus on and grow our Pushkin Vertigo imprint. It’s such an exciting time for crime fiction from around the world, and Harriet’s interest in and passion for the genre is incredible. The Others is a brilliant first acquisition by Harriet – timely, original and page-turning."
In her first deal for Pushkin, Wade bought UK and Commonwealth rights to The Others by Israeli author Sarah Blau excluding Canada from Cathryn Summerhayes at Curtis Brown. Originally published to great fanfare in Hebrew in 2018, The Others will be translated into English by Daniella Zamir.
It will be published by Pushkin Vertigo in the UK, Mulholland in the US and Doubleday in Canada in January 2021 and there was also an auction in Germany.
The synopsis reads: “It is a dark, witty and riveting novel that grapples with the conflict between conservatism and the women who choose to step outside the strict expectations that society puts upon them. One by one, they all start showing up dead.”
Summerhayes said: “The Others is such a brilliantly unique and thought-provoking crime novel and Harriet’s arrival at Pushkin Vertigo couldn’t have come at a better time. She is the perfect editor and Pushkin the perfect publisher for Sarah Blau.”
Wade said: “From the first page I was hooked by Blau’s sharp humour and atmospheric prose. With unforgettable characters that jump off the page, this raises questions that stay with you long after.”
