Pushkin Children's has acquired two new titles from Susie Bower. The first will be titled Outsiders, followed by Shoooo!
The publisher is already bringing out Bower's School for Nobodies this summer.
Sarah Odedina, editor-at-large, acquired UK and Commonwealth rights for Outsiders from Silvia Molteni at PFD. Publication is scheduled for summer 2021. For Shoooo!, Odedina acquired world rights from Molteni.
Outsiders will be a middle-grade novel about Mim who escapes the gloomy down-at-heel castle where she lives to explore the world outside and where she becomes an alchemists apprentice. As she struggles to complete the four Alchemical Works, essential to all apprentices, she finds herself in conflict with an unhappy mermaid and uncovering all sorts of mysteries about them both and their shared past.
Shoooo! will be a picture book about a grumpy woman who doesn't like animals. Her life is turned upside down by the arrival next door of a very big and loud collection of creatures. Shoooo! will be Pushkin Press' first picture book originated in-house.
Bower said: "I’m thrilled to be working again with Pushkin and Sarah Odedina. I'm especially excited and honoured that Shoooo! will be their first in-house picture book. It’s particularly fulfilling to write across a wide age-range in this way and I’m so grateful for the opportunity to do so."
Odedina added: Working with Susie on her mesmerising books is such a treat. As a writer she has the most wonderful ability to build a really satisfying and complex world for young readers. With the acquisition of this picture book it is clear that her talents to write across a range of age groups is quite exceptional."
