Puffin revives Price's Adventure series

Puffin is reviving Willard Price's Adventure series, which will be penned by Henry Tumour author Anthony McGowan, after signing a deal with his estate.

Publisher Amanda Punter and executive editor Shannon Park bought world rights, including digital, to four new books from Zoё Watkins and Corinne Turner at FourteenFiftyFour, whose subsidiary Willard Price Literary Management Ltd owns the Willard Price estate.

The books will be aimed at ages eight to 12 and the first will be published by Puffin in summer 2012 to mark the 125th anniversary of Willard Price’s birthday on 28th July.

Canadian Willard Price, who died in 1983, was a well-respected natural historian who travelled around the world on expeditions for both the National Geographic Society and the American Museum of Natural History. These inspired the 14 books that make up the children’s Adventure series featuring Roger and Hal Hunt.

Shortly before he died, Price said: “My aim in writing the Adventure series for young people was to lead them to read by making reading exciting and full of adventure. At the same time I want to inspire an interest in wild animals and their behaviour.”

The new books by McGowan will bring the wildlife adventures of the Hunt family “into the present day” said FourteenFiftyFour's Watkins. McGowan, whose previous books include adult thrillers Stag Hunt and Mortal Coil (Hodder & Stoughton) and four young adult novels including Hellbent and Henry Tumour (Definitions), said: ‘I am absolutely delighted to be reimagining Willard Price’s adventures for a whole new generation of readers.

“As a child I travelled the world in the company of Hal and Roger Hunt. I never dreamt that one day I would be setting out with the next generation of Hunts on new expeditions, not this time to collect animals for zoos, but to conserve them in the wild, and not as reader but as writer.”

All the Adventure novels by Willard Price, including Amazon Adventure and South Sea Adventure, are published in the UK by Red Fox. Six of the Adventure novels are available in English language e-book omnibus editions worldwide, published by FourteenFiftyFour Ltd.
