Publit to expand into Europe

Publit, a Swedish-based e-book service, is to launch an English-language version of its website this week as a prelude to the roll-out of the full operation internationally from 2013.

In Sweden it has deals with more than 200 publishers and authors, including Bonnier and Harlequin, which are both signed up to its “direct-to-consumer” version, whereby they use the Publit technology to underpin their own e-book efforts.

Publit also provides the infrastructure for libraries to loan e-books, and has been working with Stockholm City Library to develop its lending platform. The Swedish e-book market accounts for just 2% of total sales, but downloads via libraries have been growing rapidly, with 100,000 downloads this year.

Founder Jonas Lennermo said the company now wanted to expand internationally. He said: “The small market has made it possible for us to fine-tune and iterate on the service, and gain trust from a lot of publishers.

“We are now getting ready to launch globally. It will take time, but our aim is to constantly add more countries and markets, starting with Germany early next year.”
