Publishers reveal uplift in non-traditional retail

Many publishers have reported growth in non-traditional retail for book sales, with top sellers including self-care and gardening.

Nielsen’s Books and Consumers research has calculated the “other shop” sector – sellers who are not dedicated booksellers, internet retailers, supermarkets, book clubs or The Book People – is around 7% of the total volume by volume. It has stayed relatively stable over the last five years along with volume which is slightly up: at £26.2m for volume in 2018, up from £26m the previous year.
