Gollancz publisher Anne Clarke is to leave the Orion imprint to explore other opportunities, with Marcus Gipps, editorial director of Gollancz and sister imprint the SF Gateway, promoted to publishing director with immediate effect.
Clarke is to leave Gollancz after a short transition period, to explore other opportunities both inside and outside publishing.
Gipps (pictured), whose list of writers includes The Witcher creator Andrzej Sapkowski, will take on the strategic publishing across both lists as well as management responsibility of the team. Deputy publisher Gillian Redfearn will continue to work alongside Gipps to provide key strategic and publishing support for the lists, to acquire for Gollancz, as well as publishing her roster of brand authors, which includes Brandon Sanderson, Patrick Rothfuss, Joe Abercrombie, Scott Lynch and Garth Nix. Gipps will report directly to Orion m.d. Katie Espiner.
Two further key promotions are also being made within the Gollancz team, with Rachel Winterbottom promoted to senior commissioning editor and Brendan Durkin promoted to editor. Assistant editor Emily Lunn will continue to work with Gipps on the SF Gateway classic e-book publishing. Gollancz will also shortly be hiring an editorial assistant to support the team as a whole, and to work with Gipps and Redfearn on their lists.
Clarke, who joined Orion from Orbit US last year, said: "It’s been an honour to work on such a legendary list as Gollancz, and with such an impressive editorial team. I can’t imagine three more well-deserved promotions, and I wish them all continued epic success in future."
Espiner added: "We want to take this opportunity to thank Anne Clarke for all of her hard work and wish her the very best for her next adventure. She is handing over to Marcus, a fantastic publisher, who is enormously liked and respected across the industry, and a much-loved colleague to all at Orion. His reputation speaks for itself and his commitment to authors and their books is absolutely second to none. I know that he can lead Gollancz to great new heights and celebrate the prestige of our market-leading imprint."
