Profits surge at Lagardere books

<p>Lagardere, the French media and high technology group that acquired Hodder Headline in August, reported a strong first half across both its media and technology businesses.

At Lagardere Media, which includes its book business Hachette, sales grew 3.3% on a like-for-like basis to &#8364;4.1bn. Its operating profit of &#8364;196.8m ws up 14.2% on the first half of 2003. The book division saw first half operating profit surge by 26.6% to &#8364;37.6m, driven by income from its book operations in France and the success of partworks sales.
