Edinburgh University Press has almost trebled its net profit, with sales and rights income up 16% to £2.7m. Pre-audited accounts from the academic publisher for the year ending 31st July 2010 show an increase in profits to £430,000 from £154,000 in 2009.
While it did not strip out individual figures, it said sales in the UK increased by 28% year-on-year and by 20% in the US. E-book sales increased by more than 100%, although the publisher said it was from a small base.
Chief executive Timothy Wright said: "The performance is a testament to the growing strength of our backlist, the increase in the number of new titles published, and the improvement in our sales and marketing efforts."
However, he warned: "There are still challenging times ahead for academic publishers as the October spending review will lead to significant cuts which will filter down to library budgets in the UK, while the international economic outlook remains uncertain. It is unlikely we will repeat the sort of ratios achieved last year but we are confident that we can continue to invest in the business and grow sales."
