Profile Books is partnering with the Wellcome Collection to produce a range of titles exploring the connections between medicine, life and art, as well as publications for the venue's own exhibitions and events.
The first title, to be published in spring 2014, will be a "major" non-fiction work from crime writer Val McDermid on the history of forensics. The book will move from crime scene to court room, "introducing readers to the delicate processes of gathering and analysing medical evidence," the publisher said. Profile has acquired all rights from agent Jane Gregory, with McDermid saying the work was "more of a treat than a job" because of her keen interest in forensic science.
McDermid's book will be followed by Book of Human Emotions by Dr Tiffany Watt-Smith, described as "a unique compendium of feelings, expressions and aspects of emotion—everything from blushing to yawning, apathy to empathy, euphoria to disgust." All rights have been acquired from John Elek at A P Watt.
Profile m.d. Andrew Franklin said: "Wellcome Collection is a truly admirable institution—there's nothing like it in the world. It showcases exciting events, brilliant exhibitions and is a hotbed of innovative and imaginative thinking about science. Working with the people behind it—like visiting it—is a real tonic."
Kirty Topiwala, commissioning editor at Wellcome Collection, said the institution was "thrilled to be working with Profile Books to develop and expand our publishing portfolio", promising the partnership would offer "books that absorb, provoke and delight."
