Retailers are pushing e-books and physical books with a series of discounts and offers in the wake of Christmas, including more than 75% off bestselling hardbacks.
Jamie Oliver's hardback Save with Jamie: Shop Smart, Cook Clever, Waste Less (Michael Joseph) is among the books being offered at the biggest discounts. From its recommended retail price of £26, The Book People is offering the cookbook for just £5, a discount of over 80%, while Amazon is selling the book for £6 (discounted by 77%).
Waterstones is selling the cookbook for £20. Foyles is selling the book for £15.60 on its website if you order it for delivery (a discount of 40%) or £22.10 if you order it via the click and collect in store service. The book is currently showing as not available on the Sainsbury's website.
The Book People is offering discounts on close to 350 titles in its sale, including The Complete Thomas Library (Egmont) of 68 books for £25, from the full price of £203.99.
Both the hardbacks of David Jason's My Life (Century) and Jennifer Saunders' Bonkers (Viking) are being offered for the same price on a series of websites - for £9 on Amazon, a 55% saving on the retail price of £20, for £16 on Waterstones and for £10.99 by Sainsbury's.
Alex Ferguson's My Autobiography, the Christmas number one, is being offered for £12 on Amazon, against a retail price of £25 (a 52% discount). A similar discount is being offered by Sainsbury's which is selling the book for £12.49. In fiction, the hardback of Donna Tartt's bestseller The Goldfinch (Little, Brown) has been discounted by a number of retailers. Amazon is offering a 55% discount on the retail price of £20, selling it for £9, while Sainsbury's is offering the novel for £10.99. Dan Brown's Inferno (Bantam Press) is on sale for £7.49 on Amazon, a saving of 63% on the retail price of £20, for £9.99 at Sainsbury's.
Both Amazon and Waterstones are selling Morrissey's Autobiography (Penguin Classics) for £6.29, a saving of 30% off the full price of £8.99.
To appeal to those who received tablets and e-readers retailers including Amazon, Waterstones and Kobo have deals on e-books.
Kobo is doing a daily e-book deal - today (December 30th) is Patricia Cornwell's From Potter's Field (Hachette Digital) for £1.99 from the usual price of £3.99 - and is offering up to 80% off selected e-books in its Christmas sale. Among those in the latter offer are David Jason's My Life (Cornerstone Digital) and Jennifer Saunders' Bonkers (Penguin), both for £4.99 each against a usual retail price of £8.99.
Amazon is continuing to price-match the Great Book Sale on Google Play, which is selling Tartt's The Goldfinch in e-book for £1.99 and the David Jason e-book for £2.99. Meanwhile Amazon is also doing a 12 Days of Kindle offer, with more than 1,000 books starting from 99p, in a promotion continuing until 5th January, while eBooks by Sainsbury's is also selling books from 99p.
Publishers have been taking to Twitter to promote various offers on their titles. Orion Crime tweeted after the showing of BBC1's "Death Comes to Pemberley" to promote its Kindle Collection of The Denton Novels by Kenneth Cameron, on sale for £2.48 on Amazon. Bloomsbury has compiled a Christmas e-book sale page on its website, featuring a number of its titles including Samantha Shannon's The Bone Season, Margaret Atwood's MaddAddam, and Man Booker Prize-shortlisted The Lowland, by Jhumpa Lahiri. Customers clicking on the titles are offered a choice of different retailers, enabling them to find the best price.
And for those who did not get a tablet for Christmas, both Waterstones and Amazon are offering discounts on the Kindle Fire HDX 7". Amazon is offering £30 off, making the cheapest model £169 instead of £199, and Waterstones are offering £25 off, making the cheapest model £174.
