Penguin Random House Children’s has waltzed off with Instructions for Dancing, a "spellbinding" YA novel from New York Times bestseller Nicola Yoon, in a two-book deal.
Puffin editorial director Kelly Hurst acquired UK and Commonwealth rights from Jocelyn Lange at Random House Children’s Books. Instructions for Dancing will be published by Penguin in paperback in the UK on 3rd June 2021. The novel will be simultaneously released in the US by Delacorte Press.
The novel is the first in five years from Yoon, author of New York Times number one hit Everything, Everything (Corgi) and US National Book Award finalist The Sun is Also a Star (Corgi). Both her previous books became major motion pictures.
Her new book's blurb explains: “Instructions for Dancing is a spellbinding magical romance that follows a girl named Evie who doesn’t believe in love—especially after she witnesses a couple kiss and suddenly experiences a vision of how their romance began... and how it will end. As Evie tries to understand why the visions keep happening, she finds herself at a dance studio, learning to waltz, foxtrot, and tango with a boy named X. X is everything that Evie is not: adventurous, passionate, daring. Falling for X is definitely not what Evie had in mind. If her visions of heartbreak have taught her anything, it's that no-one escapes love unscathed. But as she and X dance around and toward each other, Evie is forced to question all she thought she knew about life, and love.”
Hurst said: “Nicola Yoon is a master of YA romance and from the very first page of Instructions for Dancing, you know you are in the hands of the very best of writers. This is 'Dirty Dancing' with a supernatural twist; a gorgeous, lyrical, unconventional romance which will delight anyone who fell in love with Everything, Everything and The Sun is Also a Star, as well as anyone who wants a great love story to escape into.”
Simultaneous English-language editions of Instructions for Dancing will be published in Canada by Penguin Random House Canada and in the UK and British Commonwealth territories by Penguin Random House Children’s Books UK. The book will also be published in translation in 16 additional languages.
