Penguin Random House (PRH) has announced a "blockbuster production" for the audio edition of James Patterson’s The Noise (Little, Brown), which publishes on 5th August and features members of PRH staff.
A cast of 11 professional actors and eager members of staff from across the Penguin Audio and Cornerstone teams recorded the 58 characters that appear throughout the thriller, as well as dramatic scenes including running, screams and battering down a door using an axe.
The Noise tells the story of young sisters Sophie and Tennant Riggin, who are the only two people to withstand a massive explosion that destroys their community, located in the shadow of Oregon's Mt Hood. The publisher's synopsis explains: "A team of elite government investigators are sent to research the fallout and the girls—why did only they survive?—with conflicting objectives. For Dr Martha Chan, a psychologist who analyses large-scale medical emergencies: study them. For Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Fraser, a career military leader with an inherent mistrust of civilians: contain them. But as the disturbance replicates across the Pacific Northwest, it threatens to topple the chain of command. Dr Chan and Lieutenant Colonel Fraser are caught between the perpetrators of the threat, and those who have the power to resist…"
Professional talent includes Skye Bennett and Raj Ghatak, who is known for roles across stage and screen, notably as Sweetie in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Bollywood musical "Bombay Dreams" and as Grayson in the Channel 4 drama "Dead Set", written by Emmy-winning Charlie Brooker.
Publishing assistant Lisa Cohen, who volunteered to record a cameo said: “I was delighted to take part in the audiobook recording of The Noise. Getting a behind-the-scenes look at the Penguin Studios allowed me to see one of our incredible producers at work, capturing the eeriness and suspense of this novel. The Noise lends itself perfectly to audio format and I have no doubt that this will be another outstanding Penguin Random House production. I can’t believe that I will be able to hear my voice in an audiobook—it feels quite surreal!”
Audio editor Meredith Benson added: “The Noise has been a hugely ambitious blockbuster production, which we are thrilled to bring to James Patterson’s fans. The original music, sound effects and cast of over 20 voices adds texture and drama to this eerie thriller for a truly immersive experience. Staff members have loved reading and working on James Patterson’s books for years, so this was the perfect opportunity for those dramatically inclined to get involved in a new way by having cameo roles in this epic audiobook.”
