PRH Children's to explore 'bold women' from black history

Penguin Random House Children’s has acquired Little Leaders: Bold Women in Black History by debut author and illustrator Vashti Harrison as part of a two book deal.

Anna Barnes, commissioning editor at PRH Children’s, acquired UK and Commonwealth English language rights to the book from Little, Brown US, also the publisher of Malala’s Magic Pencil.

Little Leaders: Bold Women in Black History is intended to educate and to inspire as a collection of 40 illustrated biographies of "trailblazing" black women of history.

It features such women as nurse Mary Seacole, politician Diane Abbott, mathematician Katherine Johnson and singer Shirley Bassey, among which it is hoped readers will find "heroes" and "role models". The book is planned for hardback publication in the UK on 1st March 2018 in time for International Women’s Day.

Anna Barnes, commissioning editor at Penguin Random House Children’s, called Harrison "an exciting and vibrant new talent", adding of Little Leaders' publication in the UK: "I know that children and adults alike will find these biographies as wonderful, extraordinary and inspirational as I have."

Vashti commented: "I am so excited to have the opportunity to share this book with the world. It was such an honour to study and present the biographies of these women with my artwork. I hope that any child can see a little bit of themselves in these amazing stories and be inspired to follow their passions or discover new ones."
