Faber has signed literary debut Then, But Not Now by Alex Hourston.
The book follows the relationship between two women, when 57-year-old Margaret helps teenager Anja escape from traffickers when they meet in the toilets at Gatwick airport.
Sarah Savitt signed UK and Commonwealth rights, excluding Canada, from Antony Topping at Greene & Heaton.
Savitt said: “Alex Hourston has created an extraordinary character in Margaret, and a wonderful atmosphere of tension, secrets and unease. The unravelling of her story, as she deals with the arrival of Anja in her life, had me gripped until the final page."
Faber will publish in 2015.
Faber Children's has also signed two books from Ross Montgomery, author of Alex, the Dog and the Unopenable Door.
The first book, entitled Parsec, is a humorous adventure story about a girl who finds an alien on the beach. It will be published in summer 2015. The second book, The Christmas Dinner of Souls, is a sinister short story collection for winter 2016.
Faber acquired the world English rights from Claire Wilson at the RCW Literary Agency.
Alice Swan, commissioning editor at Faber, said: “Ross Montgomery is an absolute genius – his writing is wacky, heartfelt and wonderfully unique. It is a joy to read a new script from him as it’s guaranteed to be full of surprises and you know, yet again, he’ll have thrown the rulebook out of the window.”
Alex, the Dog and the Unopenable Door, also published by Faber, was shortlisted for the Costa Book Awards and is currently longlisted for the Branford Boase Award.
