Publisher Pinter & Martin opens events space and bookshop

Brixton-based indie publisher Pinter & Martin is set to open a new multi-purpose venue complete with bookshop and café called effraspace.

Founded in 1997 by writer and filmmaker Martin Wagner and childbirth educator Maria Pinter, Pinter & Martin is a specialist pregnancy, birth & parenting, psychology, health and yoga publisher. The new venue is intended to give the publishers “a space to engage with our readers”, Wagner told The Bookseller.

“We wanted more contact with our readers and didn’t think that just having a bookshop would be enough”, he said. “We thought having a place for our readers to meet and exchange ideas, have fun and learn new things would fit in perfectly with what we’re doing and what our books are about”.

Effraspace, located on Effra Parade in Brixton, South London, will consist of two interlinked event spaces for classes and workshops, a cinema screen, café and a specialist bookshop showcasing Pinter & Martin titles. As a hub for the local community, effraspace will also be available for community events and private hire (artist's impression below).

Pinter & Martin will be running events and workshops focused on parenting, children and yoga, which Wagner said was a “natural extension of our publishing output”. The launch programme includes Birthing4blokes, Vinyasa flow yoga, self-defense classes, baby massage classes and parent & baby kung fu.

Previously a derelict community hall, Pinter & Martin has acquired the building on a 10-year lease from Lambeth Council and has made a “significant” investment, completely renovating the space and expanding facilities.

The publisher does not have any immediate plans to open more venues but says it may do so in the future. “It’s been very hard, and if it works we may branch out and open venues in other areas. But it’s been a big challenge so we’re taking it one step at a time”, Wagner said.

Pinter & Martin is currently a team of four and has plans to hire staff to run the new venue within the next three months.

Effraspace will be formally opened by French obstetrician and childbirth specialist Michel Odent tonight (21st April).
