Picador has snapped up the “tender, moving and beautifully written” third novel from Sarah Butler.
Associate publisher Francesca Main has acquired UK and Commonwealth rights from Cathryn Summerhayes at Curtis Brown for Jack and Bet, which will publish in March 2020.
The synopsis explains: “Jack and Bet have been together for seventy years - almost a lifetime - and happily so, for the most part. All they want is to enjoy their remaining days in the flat they have tried to make their home. Their son Tommy has other ideas: he wants them to live somewhere with round-the-clock care, hot meals, activities. When they strike up an unlikely friendship with Marinela, a young Romanian woman, Bet thinks she has found the perfect solution - one that could change Marinela's life as well as theirs. But this means revisiting an old love affair, and confronting a long-buried secret.”
Butler is the author of two previous novels, Ten Things I've Learnt About Love (2014) and Before the Fire (2016), both published by Picador, which have been translated into 14 languages. She is currently a CHASE Scholar in Creative Writing at the Open University and lectures part-time in Creative Writing at Manchester Metropolitan University.
Main said: “Sarah was one of the first authors I brought to Picador years ago and I'm delighted to be publishing her tender, moving and beautifully written new novel. Jack and Bet are two unforgettable characters, drawn with a rare intimacy and compassion, and I can't wait for readers to meet them.”
