Picador has acquired the rights to Lily King's latest novel Writers & Lovers, with plans to publish in summer 2020.
Senior commissioning editor Sophie Jonathan acquired UK and commonwealth rights in print, ebook and audio from Amy Hundley at Grove Atlantic. Meanwhile, Canadian rights sold to Iris Tupholme at Harper Canada.
Writers & Lovers "is a transfixing novel that explores the terrifying and exhilarating leap between the end of one phase of life and the beginning of another. It is a novel about love and creativity, and ultimately it captures the moment when a woman becomes an artist", said Picador.
Following 31-year-old Casey, who moves back to Massachusetts after a "devastating love affair", Writers & Lovers sees Casey "knocked sideways by grief and loneliness" after her mother dies, with her one constant being the novel she has been writing for six years. Casey then meets Silas and a few weeks later, Oscar and "suddenly Casey finds herself at one corner of a love triangle, stuck between two very different relationships that promise two very different futures," said Picador.
Jonathan said: "Writers & Lovers is a truly astonishing novel: crisply witty, yet achingly moving and often painfully exposing. It is a book of heart-breaking grief played out alongside delightful humour, and some of the sharpest writing about relationships between men and women that I’ve ever read. All that is brought together by this extraordinary need Casey has to express herself creatively – the writing of her novel being her one constant over years of turbulence.
"So few novels truly manage to conjure characters as Lily King does – potent, awkward, each of them dragging a past behind them that so clearly shapes who they are in these pages – and for each of them there is so much at stake: their family, their identity, that one final self-sacrifice that might prove too much. Utterly captivating and impossible to put down, this novel is already beloved at Pan Macmillan and I can’t wait to share it with the world – it promises to be a sensation, and we have huge ambitions for Lily King."
King is the author of The Pleasing Hour, The English Teacher, Father of the Rain and Euphoria, which Picador published in 2014.
