Picador has acquired a book about “the ancient and deep-seated human fascination with flight”.
Publisher Paul Baggaley bought UK and Commonwealth rights to Skybound by Rebecca Loncraine from James Gill at United Agents.
Loncraine suffered from breast cancer in her early 30s, and after recovery decided to tackle her fear of flying by signing up for a gliding school near her home in the Black Mountains of Wales.
Skybound, which travels from the Black Mountains to extreme gliding locations around the world, weaves “memoir, adventure, biography, travel, history and nature writing into a literally uplifting story about how a life-threatening illness led the author to embark on a journey upward”.
Baggaley said: “I am delighted to be the publisher of what I believe will be a ground-breaking work of memoir and nature writing.
“Rebecca’s story is remarkable. Her journey into the world of unpowered flight is compelling and the quality of her writing about the natural world is remarkable.
“Whilst Rebecca belongs to the very exciting new group of writers describing the natural world, I believe her female perspective and her skybound vision make her book unique.”
Skybound will be published in spring 2016.
