Picador buys "unforgettable" debut

Sam Humphreys at Picador has bought Fern Seed, "an unforgettable read" by Charles Lambert.

Lambert's short stories have appeared in various anthologies, and have won him a shortlisting for the O Henry Prize in the US as well as an Independent on Sunday/Bloomsbury award.

Fern Seed, which Picador will publish in early 2008, concerns the post-Second World War history of a woman who begins her narrative: "When I was 13, my father killed my mother." Humphreys bought UK and Commonwealth rights (exc Canada) through Isobel Dixon of Blake Friedmann.
