Picador and The Stinging Fly have signed a second collection of short stories from Wendy Erskine.
Declan Meade at The Stinging Fly and commissioning editor Ansa Khan Khattak at Picador acquired the title from Lucy Luck at C+W. The as-yet-untitled collection will be published in February 2022 by The Stinging Fly in the island of Ireland, and Picador, which has UK and Commonwealth rights, in the UK (excluding Northern Ireland).
Erskine’s first collection, Sweet Home (Picador), won the Butler Literary Award, was shortlisted for the Edge Hill and Republic of Consciousness Prize, and was longlisted for the Gordon Burn Prize and the Sunday Times Audible Short Story Award.
The synopsis states: “As with Erskine’s debut, the stories in this new collection offer revealing snapshots of the domestic lives and chance encounters of ordinary people, laying bare all the joy, humour, tragedy and farce that lie therein.”
Khattak said: “I’m so excited that a new collection of stories from Wendy will be out next year, and that Picador will be publishing alongside The Stinging Fly. She is, simply put, one of the best short story writers at work today."
Erskine added: “It was brilliant to work with Declan at The Stinging Fly, and Ansa and everyone at Picador, on Sweet Home—but how wonderful that we get to do it all over again with a new collection!”
