A retelling of The Tale of Peter Rabbit is to be given away as one of this year's Booktime titles.
The Tale of a Naughty Little Rabbit, published by Frederick Warne & Co, marks the 110th anniversary of Beatrix Potter’s classic. The picture book will be one of two books given to every child starting school in the academic year 2012-13 in England and Wales as part of Booktrust’s Booktime initiative.
Tim’s Din by Monica Hughes and illustrated by Bill Ledger (Pearson Education), will be the second title given to eligible children in England.
In Wales, children will receive The Tale of a Naughty Little Rabbit and a Welsh-language title, to be announced this summer. This year will mark the first time that every Welsh child starting school will be included in the scheme after a successful pilot stage last year, with 35,000 children due to receive a Booktime book bag.
In total, 1.45 million books will be given to 725,000 4-5-year-olds.
Booktrust chief executive, Viv Bird said: “Booktime is bringing two exciting books to over 700,000 homes this year, thanks to the partnership between Booktrust and Pearson. We know that all families will find something to love in their two free books, and that they will enjoy lots of laughter and surprises as they share the stories over and over again.”
The Booktime programme has been running since 2006 and has previously included works by Janet and Allan Ahlberg and Claudia Lloyd.
