People's Book Prize plans X Factor style TV show

The People's Book Prize is in negotiations for an "X Factor" style TV series to be broadcast next year. The awards, which are judged by public vote, are currently calling for entries for the "winter collection" of titles, published between 1st December 2010 and 28th February 2011 in the categories of fiction, non-fiction and children's. The deadline for entries is 9th November.

Founder Tatiana Wilson said that discussions were in "final stages" for a series of 13 one-hour TV shows, to run from 30th April 2011 in the run-up to the winners' announcement on 23rd July, with "high level" discussions with a sponsor underway. Wilson said that the sponsor was "powerful" and "very interested in books" but would not reveal the name. She added that she hoped an announcement could be made by early December.

The show, currently titled "Britain's Next Bestsellers" will showcase the titles entered into the book prize's quarterly collections plus the first-time authors listed for the Beryl Bainbridge Award. Wilson described it as an "X factor format" with finalists being voted out of each round until a winner in each category, plus the Beryl Bainbridge winner, is crowned in July. Each author will be interviewed about their book, which is also discussed by a presenter plus celebrity guests.

"We have to glamorise writing, authors and books and stories themselves," she explained. "There's a lot that one can do on TV, that's why we want to go national." She added that the concept of the prize is to "find the talent" from both big and small publishers.

Each quarter the nine new titles which get the most votes (three per category) will go forward as finalists for the annual People's Book Prize Awards. The summer collection, of titles published from 1st June-31st August; autumn, from 1st September-30th November (with voting now taking place); and the winter collection (1st December 2010-28th February 2011).
