Penguin has signed Bait by J Kent Messum, described by the publisher as a cross between “'Lost’, Trainspotting and The Hunger Games".
Rowland White at Michael Joseph acquired UK and Commonwealth rights (excluding Canada) from Annabel Merullo at PFD, as well as a second novel, Husk.
The book was first sold at the end of 2012 to Penguin USA and Penguin Canada, and has also been sold in Brazil, the Czech Republic and Bulgaria. Bait will be published in UK and North America in September 2013.
The novel follows six strangers who wake up on a remote island in the Florida Keys with no memory of their arrival. They soon discover they have one thing in common: they are all heroin addicts from the slums of Miami.
Merullo said: “As soon as we picked up Jamie’s novel from the slush pile, we knew that we’d found something special. It’s a gripping, page-turning read, and we’re so pleased that Penguin here—and across the pond—shares our enthusiasm for Jamie’s writing.”
Husk depicts a world in the future in which advances in technology have managed to conquer death: the human brain has been virtually mapped, so that people may live on in virtual reality.
