Pearson is launching a five-year project on literacy by inviting people to contribute tips on inspiring projects around the globe.
Project Literacy is described as a "major new campaign dedicated to working in partnership with our peers and our communities to build a more literate world in which every individual is empowered to succeed, progress and flourish."
The first stage in the project is to invite individuals to share the projects and initiatives they admire and point out where there is more work to do, via an interactive online map.
"Over the next five years, we are committed to building on this early discussion to facilitate, contribute to and invest in new collaboration and action on the evolving challenges and opportunities around literacy," Pearson said.
"Your contributions will have a direct impact on how Project Literacy takes shape in the coming years. We are committed to finding and putting resources, expertise and reach behind extraordinary projects and initiatives that stand to make a real difference in people’s lives and learning".
Chief executive John Fallon, on the Pearson blog, described Project Literacy as "a social movement aiming to shed light on this international crisis; creating conversations and sharing projects and ideas that will make headway on giving every person access to the tools they need to become literate." He added: "We, as a learning company with technology at its core, are in a unique place to help unlock the power of literacy for so many people….Do we see technology as a barrier to literacy and skill-building, or as an enabling tool that can be used to educate, to build, to improve, and so vitally – to create?"
