Random House imprint Hutchinson has bought the rights for Brief Lives, a book on the lives of a variety of influential people in the 20th century by Paul Johnson.
Editorial director, Paul Sidey acquired British Commonwealth rights including Canada, exclusive Europe including serial from Natasha Fairweather of A.P. Watt.
Sidey said: "For years I have been an admirer of Paul Johnson's astute commentary on the world and its ways. This book contains the distilled essence of his experience of a complex variety of people who have contributed to our political, spiritual and cultural life. Where else can you get something like that in a single volume? And with excellent jokes?"
