Pan Macmillan has signed historical fiction writer Tracy Rees.
Editorial director Caroline Hogg acquired world and translation rights for The Rose Garden from Eugenie Furniss at 42. The publication date is set for 2021.
The Rose Garden will focus on the lives of three female characters in late 19th-century London. Set in Hampstead, it explores the long-held grudges between rival families and the secrets they are desperate to keep.
Hogg said: “It only takes one page of a Tracy Rees novel to know that she has an innate gift for storytelling. Her readers step into a whole other world from the very first sentence, in fact. She combines that natural talent with an incredible work ethic and diligence and, as such, I feel like an incredibly lucky editor.”
Rees, who was previously with Quercus for five years. added: “From my first meeting with Caroline, I loved her enthusiasm and editorial vision—I can't wait to see what we do together for this new story and beyond. I have high hopes that this will be the start of a long, rich and creative publishing relationship.”
