Pan Mac buys Collector's Library

Pan Macmillan has bought Collector’s Library for an undisclosed sum.

Harriet Sanders, currently rights director at Pan Macmillan, has been appointed publisher of Collector’s Library, which will become an imprint within Pan Macmillan under adult books publisher Jeremy Trevathan.

The three founders of Collector’s Library - Marcus Clapham, Clive Reynard and Ken Webb - will work with Pan Macmillan to “support a smooth transition of the business to its new owners”, before retiring from the business. No other staff work for Collector's Library.

Founded in 2003 with 17 titles, Collector’s Library is a publisher of high-quality pocket hardcover classics. It has almost 200 books in print, spanning fiction, non-fiction, anthologies, poetry and children’s classics and including authors such as Jane Austen, Arthur Conan Doyle, Antoine De Saint-Exupery, Lewis Carroll, Charles Dickens, William Shakespeare, F Scott Fitzgerald, Oscar Wilde and Edgar Allan Poe.

CRW Publishing, the registered company behind brand Collector’s Library, has Nielsen BookScan sales of £5.7m since 2003, with sales of £426,591 in 2014, down 12% on the previous year. The company’s 2014 bestseller was Alice in Wonderland, which sold 1,870 copies in the UK through Nielsen Bookscan. However a Pan Macmillan spokeperson said Nielsen only recorded "a small proportion" of total sales, as the business benefited from non-traditional and international sales.

Anthony Forbes Watson, Pan Macmillan m.d., said: “We are delighted to welcome Collector’s Library into the Pan Macmillan family.  Its beautifully produced, handy and affordable range of classics make the perfect gift for book lovers in the UK and internationally."

Cameron Brown, chairman of Collector's Library, said: "My colleagues Ken Webb, Marcus Clapham and Clive Reynard are delighted to have been able to achieve this sale to Pan Macmillan, with whom we have had a close relationship on sales and distribution for several years. For our customers and suppliers this is a positive step, which will allow the brand to continue to flourish, and the founding directors are confident that the Pan Macmillan editorial team will bring a positive new approach to a classic list."

Books from Collector’s Library are pocket format hardcover editions printed on high quality papers with cloth binding, endpapers, gilt edges, ribbon markers, and head and tail bands.

Forthcoming titles, all released on 1st April, include Sherlock Holmes: The Dark Mysteries by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, costing £8.99, and Grimms’ Fairy Tales by the Brothers Grimm, costing £10.99.

Orders for Collector’s Library should continue to be placed with Macmillan Distribution Ltd.
