Pan Macmillan has acquired by two historical fiction novels by Pamela Hartshorne for a high five-figure sum from Caroline Sheldon.
Publishing director Wayne Brookes acquired world rights including translation for Candles in the Dark and one other novel.
Brookes called Candles a "haunting tale of passion, possession and regression." He added: "Pamela has created a tantalising novel that moves effortlessly between the past and the present, detailing the lives of two women joined together by tragedy. This is female fiction at its riveting best."
Hartshorne said: "This is a very exciting change of direction for me. I'm absolutely delighted to be working with Wayne Brookes and am looking forward to a long and happy relationship with Pan Macmillan."
Sheldon said: "I've looked long and hard for a novel to match the storytelling and atmosphere of heroine writers such as Philippa Gregory and Barbara Erskine. This stunning novel, with the added bonus of witchcraft and the rich background of Tudor York has it in spades."
Pan Macmillan will publish Candles in the Dark in autumn 2012, with the second title to follow in 2013.
