Pan Macmillan has won debut novel Tell the Wolves I'm Home by Carol Rifka Brunt following a five-way publisher auction.
Senior commissioning editor Jenny Geras acquired UK and Commonwealth rights from Caspian Dennis at Abner Stein, working on behalf of primary agent Foundry in New York.
The book tells the story of 13-year-old June whose uncle Finn dies from AIDS, and who develops a secret friendship with his lover, Toby.
Geras said: "This is a very special book and we all fell in love with it. It is an astonishingly accomplished debut and June's voice is just perfect. The book is heartbreaking at the same time as being incredibly humane and warm. We're thrilled that Carol has decided to come to Pan Macmillan."
Macmillan will publish in trade paperback alongside Dial Press, Random House US, in summer 2012.
