Pan Macmillan imprint Tor UK has acquired world English language rights to a "dystopian fantasy" series by debut author Jay Kristoff.
Editorial director Julie Crisp bought the titles in association with associate publisher Pete Wolverton at Thomas Dunne Books, an imprint of St Martins Press in the US, from Matt Bialer at Sanford J Greenburger Associates.
Crisp said: "This is an incredibly imaginative and well-executed fantasy. Think Across the Nightingale Floor and Eragon mixed with steampunk, strong original characters and fast-paced action. It's a wonderful read that everyone in-house fell in love with. So we're thrilled that Jay will be joining the Tor UK team."
The first title in the series, Stormdancer, will be published in 2012, and follows Yukiko and her warrior father, sent on a mission in steampunk feudal Japan. After an accident, Yukiko is left alone with a griffin, whose trust she must win to become a "Stormdancer".
Tor UK plans to release the following two titles in 2013 and 2014.
