Oxford University Press has acquired a debut children's novel by journalist and blogger Nikki Sheehan.
Editor Clare Whitston bought UK and Commonwealth rights in Who Framed Klaris Cliff? by Sheehan through Julia Churchill at the Greenhouse Literary Agency, with plans to publish in spring 2014.
The story centres on Joseph and his imaginary friend Klaris, at a time when "hysteria about the dangers of imaginary friends in palpable". Despite the dangers, Joseph realises he must speak up for Klaris if he is to stand a chance of saving himself.
Whitston said: "From the first page I knew this was something extraordinary and by the end of the first chapter, I was desperate to start sharing this story with others. It is a stunning debut novel—a unique premise, delivered with an original writing style that is utterly gripping. A truly rare and special find."
