Orion has acquired two books by writer and military historian Christian Cameron on Ancient Greece.
Craig Lye, editorial assistant at Orion Fiction, bought world all language rights from Shelley Power at the Shelley Power Literary Agency to The New Achilles and The Last Greek by Cameron to be published in February 2019 and spring 2020 respectively.
The duology will follow the life of "the greatest Greek general you’ve never heard of" Philopoemen, a fighter and political leader who commanded Greek forces at the turn of the third century BC. Mighty Rome was fresh from the destruction of Carthage, and Imperial Macedon chose Greece as their battlefield.
Craig said: “In this new series Christian returns to his literary heartland: Greece. Christian’s dedication to re-enacting and experimental archaeology means that he writes with a lived-in authenticity about characters long gone. It is this authenticity, this ability to bring his readers accurately into the minutiae of his characters’ lives, which draws readers to his novels time and again. And when that is coupled with a fantastic story like the life of Philopoemen? That’s a potent mix.”
Cameron said: “This is a pair of novels I have wanted to write for five years, and I’m eager to get started. Philopoemen allows me to write about Greece, which I love; about the Hellenistic world, which is fascinatingly complex, and about one of the best characters, and stories, in the Ancient World. Philopoemen lived, and died, like a real-life Achilles. What more can an author ask for?”
