Orion Children's Books is supporting the London Evening Standard's literacy campaign Get London Reading with donations of Horrid Henry books.
Volunteers to the Standard-backed scheme to help schoolchildren with their reading will each receive a copy of early reader title Horrid Henry's Car Journey by author Francesca Simon. The donation will apply to all volunteers currently working with children through Volunteer Reading Help, the charity supported by the newspaper, plus any new volunteers to the scheme up to the end of 2011.
Orion trade managing director Lisa Milton said the publisher was delighted to be supporting such a dynamic and important campaign. "We hope that the volunteers, along with their young charges, will find laughter, fun and lots to inspire within the pages of Horrid Henry’s adventures," she said.
Simon said she was "thrilled" that her character was doing his bit to encourage a love of reading among children. "As a past reading volunteer in a North London Primary, I have experienced first hand what it is like for a child who has never been able to read to suddenly discover that they can and that books are their friends," she said. "My great concern now is that libraries remain open and well stocked with books for all these newly confident readers."
