Orchard Books and the National Literacy Trust are teaming up for a school reading challenge that will deliver 30,000 books to children in the UK.
For the challenge, 5,000 children will receive one of two series published by Orchard; the Rainbow Magic series (about a group of fairy friends) or the Beast Quest series (a fantasy adventure tale).
The children will receive points for working through the books, picking up marks for completing a challenge, which is 10 minutes of reading at school or at home.
Every child who finishes their series, which is 11.5 hours of reading time, will be entered into a prize draw to win merchandise, book vouchers and a visit from one of the characters from the books.
Susie Musgrove, competitions manager at the National Literacy Trust, said: “Series fiction can be a great way to engage reluctant readers due to the collectible nature of the books, and the challenges provide teachers with a platform for encouraging children to read for pleasure – something we know is hugely important for future achievement.”
Teachers at schools taking part will receive free resources such as wall maps, reading logs and certificates.
The Rainbow Magic books, which are ghostwritten under the pseudonym Daisy Meadows, have sold in 29 million copies worldwide since the launch in 2003. The brand is owned by HIT Entertainment.
The Beast Quest series, which Orchard has published alongside Coolabi since 2012, have sold 13.5 million copies worldwide.
