Orchard acquires US YA title

Orchard Books has acquired YA title The Witch of Salt & Storm, a book set in a late-1800s whaling community, by US debut author Kendall Kulper.

Orchard Books and Little, Brown Books for Young Readers (US) made a pre-emptive two book deal with Sara Crowe at Harvey Klinger. Orchard has acquired the UK and Commonwealth Rights.

The main character of the story is sixteen-year-old Avery Roe, who wants to take her rightful place as the sea witch of Prince Island to keep the island’s whalers safe. But before she learns the necessary magic, her mother steals her away from her grandmother, meaning Avery must escape before her grandmother dies, taking with her the secrets of the Roe family power.

Jessica Clarke, fiction editorial director for Orchard Books, said the book is a “heart-achingly romantic debut”. She added: “Inventive and lyrical, yet with a gripping adventure at its heart, The Witch of Salt and Storm presents the ever-compelling world of witchcraft in an exciting new light and is sure to be a word-of-mouth sensation.”

Both Orchard Books and Little, Brown US will publish the book this autumn.
