Oneworld to tell story of Everest ascent

Oneworld is to publish the first book on Sir Edmund Hillary's ascent of Everest for 50 years. It will be the official book of the Himalayan Trust, the charity founded by the famous mountaineer.

Everest 1953: The Real Story of the First Team to Conquer the Summit by Mick Conefrey will be published in 2013, to tie in with the 60th anniversary of the ascent.

Commissioning editor Mike Harpley bought UK and Commonwealth rights from Anthony Sheil at Aitken Alexander. Conefrey is the author of How to Climb Mont Blanc in a Skirt and The Adventurer’s Handbook, both published by Oneworld.

Harpley said: “This is the first book on this landmark ascent since Hillary’s account 50 years ago. Mick Conefrey’s done a remarkable job, gaining exclusive access to the team’s private diaries. It’s a gripping read.”
