Omnibus to update Dylan biog in time for his 70th

Specialist music publisher Omnibus Press is to publish an updated version of Robert Shelton’s biography of Bob Dylan.

It will be released on 4th April 2011, just ahead of the singer-songwriter’s 70th birthday in May. Shelton, who died in 1995, was a close friend of Dylan’s, meeting him when he first arrived in New York in the 1960s. Working on the New York Times from 1958 to 1968, he wrote some of the first reviews of Dylan’s low-key gigs in 1961.

First published in 1986, Shelton’s is the only biography to be written with the singer’s active co-operation, with Shelton being the only journalist to interview Dylan’s parents, Abe and Beatty Zimmerman, in depth. The book also includes material from interviews with Dylan’s brother, David, and his childhood friends, student peers and muse, Suze Rotolo.

David Barraclough, commissioning editor, said: “They’ve restored some parts that were cut out originally from Shelton’s manuscripts, and have updated the footnotes, bibliography and the choronology of his life and career. The meat of the book is still in 1968, but it has been brought right up to date.” The title also has a new discography. He added: “It deserves a more deluxe approach, so we’ve made it a hardcover, and added photos within the text so that the actual package is powerful.”

Omnibus is hoping it will appeal to casual Dylan fans as well as his die-hard followers. Barraclough said: “In many ways, if you’re interested in Dylan you would go either to this book or to Dylan’s own memoir [Bob Dylan: Chronicles (Pocket Books)]. The memoir tells us a lot, but only about certain parts of his life.” Publicity manager Charlie Harris added: “Dylan is such a legend and his fan base is immense. This book is going to go off the scale.”

The title will be published as a £19.95 hardback, with colour images chosen from a range of different photographers.
