Orion's new commissioning editor Olivia Morris has acquired three new titles since joining the Non-fiction and Spring teams three months ago from Pan Macmillan.
Morris has acquired Modern Calligraphy by Lucy Edmonds of Quill London; Look Fabulous Forever by online beauty writer Tricia Cusden; and The Course of Happiness by psychology professor Tim Bono.
Modern Calligraphy is an illustrated workbook that gives an introduction to the skill and creative ways to develop your own unique style of lettering. Its author, Edmonds, is the founder of Quill, the stationer and host of London’s first modern calligraphy workshop, whose popular Instagram feed provides design inspiration. After acquiring world rights in deal direct with the author, Orion Non-fiction will publish the book in trade paperback in June 2016
Look Fabulous Forever is an illustrated guide to "feeling stylish, healthy and happy whatever your age". Cusden is credited in blazing a trail as one of the older generation of British beauty vloggers, having launched her brand of makeup for older women and YouTube tutorials three years ago, aged 65, out of frustration her age group was being ignored by the beauty industry. World rights were acquired at auction from Danielle Zigner at LBA Books with plans to publish in hardback in early 2018 on the Orion Spring lifestyle list.
The Course of Happiness is a research-based guide for increasing happiness in overstressed young adults. UK and Commonwealth rights excluding Canada were acquired from Anna Carmichael at Abner Stein. North American rights were pre-empted by Brittany Hamblin McInerney at Grand Central from Melissa Edwards at Stonesong. Orion will publish in trade paperback simultaneously with the US in Spring 2018.
Morris said: "I’m really pleased to have hit the ground running at Orion and that my first three acquisitions perfectly convey the routes I’ll be exploring as a commissioning editor for health, lifestyle and self-improvement. I look forward to continuing to work collaboratively with agents, approaching authors directly, and uniting with colleagues at our sister companies around the world. I am delighted to welcome Lucy, Tricia and Tim to Orion. Their books on happiness, style and confidence, and creativity are brilliant additions to the Non-fiction and Spring lists."
