Novel about young widower wins six-figure deal

<p>Jon Wood at Orion has paid a six-figure, pre-emptive sum for two novels by Jonathan Tropper, whose How To Talk to a Widower (US title: After Hailey) has also gone in a six-figure deal to movie studio Paramount.

How To Talk to a Widower is, Wood says, "incredibly funny and incredibly sad and usually within the same paragraph". It concerns a 29-year-old man, overcome by grief following the death of his wife in a plane crash, and also having to cope with a teenage stepson and a crazy family. Then he finds that his magazine column about his predicament makes him famous.
